Gastroenterology Fellowship Curriculum
Our Gastrointestinal (GI) Fellowship Program provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders, with an emphasis on health equity. The curriculum is designed to equip fellows with advanced clinical knowledge, procedural expertise, and research skills to excel in the field of gastroenterology. Through a combination of hands-on patient care, didactic learning, and research opportunities, fellows will gain a well-rounded experience to become leaders in the field.
Clinical Training
Fellows will receive rigorous, hands-on training across all areas of gastroenterology and hepatology. They will encounter a wide range of clinical pathology and manage a diverse patient population across our 3 clinical sites: Grady Memorial Hospital, the Atlanta VA Medical Center, and Piedmont Atlanta hospital.
Didactic Education
Fellows will participate in a robust educational program that includes:
- Weekly Didactic Lectures: Covering core topics in gastroenterology and hepatology
- Case-Based Discussions: Interactive sessions that allow fellows to critically evaluate complex cases and hone their diagnostic and clinical reasoning skills.
- Journal Clubs: Fellows and faculty will engage in monthly discussions of current research articles, fostering an understanding of the latest evidence and clinical guidelines in gastroenterology.
- GI Grand rounds: Quarterly lectures with invited speakers to discuss innovative topics in GI and Hepatology.
Research and Scholarly Activity
Our program emphasizes the importance of scholarly activity, encouraging fellows to engage in clinical, basic science, or translational research. Fellows will have dedicated research time in the second and third year of fellowship, with access to research resources, mentorship from faculty members, and opportunities to present at national and international conferences. Fellows are expected to complete at least one research project and a yearly QI project during their training.
The division has dedicated clinical and translational research staff that will work with our trainees.
Fellowship Structure
The GI Fellowship Program is structured to ensure continuous development of clinical and academic expertise, with clear milestones throughout the training period.
- Year 1: Focus on clinical training, endoscopic skills development, and foundational didactic education.
- Year 2: Emphasis on advanced procedural skills, leadership development, and research initiation.
- Year 3: Specialization in a chosen area of interest, including advanced GI procedures, complex cases, and scholarly project completion.
Program Leadership and Mentorship
Throughout the fellowship, fellows will receive individualized mentorship from faculty members.
